Well-written Honest Biography on our Second Prime Minister
I thought that I was only going to read about Mr Goh’s journey to become the second prime minister, however, the last thing I expected was to get an insight into all that happened behind the scenes. Mr Goh went through quite a bit prior to becoming the second prime minister and even when he was the prime minister. There were numerous comments made by the late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew both behind the scenes and even at public events, like in 1988 when Mr Lee commented that he preferred Dr Tony Tan instead of Mr Goh to be his successor. *Ouch*
Everyone knows that Mr Goh and the late Mr Lee are on two ends of the spectrum when it came to personalities. Mr Lee even suggested books for Mr Goh to read so that his predecessor would not be so soft, however, Mr Goh simply chucked it. With each step Mr Goh took, he was often met with much disapproval from Mr Lee, though it has to be said that Mr Lee left Mr Goh to his own devices to still make the decisions. I cannot begin to imagine how difficult a time it must have been for Mr Goh, never being able to get that pat on the back for a job well done as it sure sounds like it. Mr Goh must have been very self-motivated as he held the position for quite some time.
Mr Peh Shing Huei made this book a real page-turner and you will devour every word, especially since he ensured that he asked even the trickiest of questions. What makes this book such a good read is due to the fact that there is minimal sugar-coating and it is much appreciated. I highly recommend this book and I wait with anticipation for the next volume.
